Podcast #288 – The 60 Something Crisis: How to Live an Extraordinary Life in Retirement
Description:
In this episode, I speak to Barbara Pagano, author of The 60-Something Crisis: How to Live an Extraordinary Life in Retirement. I think you’ll find that the process Barbara describes in the book is applicable beyond retirement.
Read some of their stories on their website:
Hi. I’m Barbara Pagano…
Despite degrees in human behavior and many successful transitions into new life stages (I even pre-planned a very successful midlife crisis for myself in my mid-40s), it’s all about “retirement” – the word we most often use for a film and pivot use time in life at 65 – didn’t suit me.
If there was a yellow brick path to happiness and joy, I wanted to be on it. But where was this road and who should I be now?
It shouldn’t have been that hard, but it was. I became an accomplished scholar of the current literature on aging, retirement, non-retirement, productive longevity, well-being, and happiness.
The discovery that work identity is an extraordinarily powerful part of who we are, and that productivity equates to better health, according to the latest research on longevity and well-being, was a game changer.
Working until 85 – not 65 – is the “new retirement” for me and millions of others. Volunteering, traveling just to travel and not make money – it doesn’t work for me and it doesn’t work for millions of others.
